At the heart of Gondomar you can enter the Filigree Route, which takes you through the ancient production process, step by step, visiting genuine goldsmiths who introduce you to their legacy. But what is filigree exactly? Imagine two very thin strands of gold or silver, carefully twisted and intertwined to create beautiful shapes, which are filled with delicate tracery. This lengthy process involves drawing, moulding, twisting, beating, heating, bleaching, filling and welding. It’s not an easy art to master. Completely hand crafted, in small-scale workshops, the art of filigree passes down from generation to generation, that’s why it is registered in the National System of Certification of Traditional Handcrafted Products and is under appreciation to become Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. A tradition that we wear with pride.
